Well, I guess I’ve said this before after I heard this song for the first time a week ago at the Rescue Rooms, but this 3 track CD single has confirmed my initial impression of ‘Mona Lisa’. If you listen through the Beatles-esque riffs and harmonies of the studio production, behind it you’ll find lyrics and a rhythm that when belted out live is Jesse’s ‘No Way Out’ for 2004. Apparently Jesse wrote the lyrics for ‘Mona Lisa’ ‘on the hoof’ as he and the band were recording the song, something he admits he doesn’t do often.

The second song on the EP, ‘New World Order’, is an example of Jesse’s more controlled lyrical style of writing, resurrecting a couple of classic lines from a song Jesse penned straight after his D Generation days, called ‘Money Runner’. Musically it is reminiscent of ‘Riding On The Subway’ from Jesse’s solo debut album The Fine Art Of Self Destruction, although again when performed live it is delivered with much more power and energy than this remixed single version.

The third track, ‘Holy Ghost’ is much softer around the edges than the other two songs, leaning more towards Lou Reed’s interpretation of a New York singer / songwriter than Joey Ramone’s. There are also lyrical echoes of the D Generation song ‘Violent Love’, from their final album Through The Darkness, as Jesse recounts his experiences on tour and the yearning for his native New York City that those long stretches away from home evoke. ‘Holy Ghost’ is the obligatory unmissable, exclusive track that makes this CD essential!
